The pros and cons of hardened tooth surface reducers and soft tooth surface reducers are outlined below:
(1) It features a high tooth surface hardness, typically above HRC58. The gear delivers outstanding wear resistance and can sustain greater contact stress and shock loads. Its load capacity is 2 to 3 times that of a soft tooth surface reducer of the same size, making it ideal for heavy-load, high-speed applications and working conditions with frequent start-stop cycles.
(2) It achieves high transmission efficiency ranging from 96% to 98%. The gear teeth are quenched and ground, which guarantees high tooth profile precision and minimal meshing clearance. This leads to reduced vibration and noise during operation and superior running stability.
(3) It offers an extended service life. With proper lubrication and routine maintenance, its service lifespan can reach 10–20 years, much longer than soft tooth surface reducers. This cuts down equipment replacement frequency and downtime for maintenance.
(4) It has a compact construction. For the same load rating, its volume and weight are 15%–30% less than soft tooth surface reducers. It saves installation space and fits well into various equipment designs with limited space.
(1) Manufacturing costs are relatively high. The tooth surface requires multiple precision machining steps including quenching, tempering and grinding. Strict standards are imposed on production equipment and workflows. Raw material and processing costs are 30%–50% higher compared with soft tooth surface reducers.
(2) It demands precise installation and high tooth profile accuracy. Excessive deviation in coaxiality or parallelism during installation easily triggers localized stress concentration on the tooth surface, resulting in failures such as pitting corrosion and gear tooth fracture. The installation and commissioning process also takes more time.
(3) It has limited tolerance for extreme overload shocks. While capable of handling regular impact loads, the gear tooth surface may suffer chipping and cracks under sudden extreme overload. Repairs are difficult, and the entire gear set usually needs replacement.
(4) Ongoing maintenance comes at a higher cost. The lubricating oil must provide excellent extreme-pressure and anti-wear properties. Oil quality indicators need periodic inspection, and fault diagnosis relies on professional testing instruments, creating a high technical barrier for maintenance work.
