What hazards can impurities invading the worm gear and worm of a reducer cause

The specific hazards can be understood as a fault chain:

1. Increased tooth surface abrasive wear

When impurities such as dust, sand particles, metal filings, and oil sludge enter the meshing area, they become trapped between the worm gear tooth surface and the worm tooth surface, acting like abrasives, which damages the oil film and causes direct metal surface friction.

It manifests as tooth surface scratches, grooves, and step-like wear, with severe cases leading to tooth profile degradation and tooth thickness thinning.

2. Increased risks of pitting, spalling, and bonding

Impurities increase local contact stress, making the tooth surface more prone to pitting; once pitting occurs, it can lead to the formation of spalling pits.

Meanwhile, after impurities destroy the lubricating film, the heat generated by sliding friction between the worm gear and worm wheel is difficult to isolate by the oil film, leading to increased tooth surface temperature, which may result in scuffing or even localized welding and tearing.

3. Transmission accuracy decreases, backlash increases

After the worm gear tooth surface wears, the meshing clearance will increase, leading to higher transmission backlash and reduced positioning accuracy.

For devices with high output accuracy requirements, issues such as motion lag, unstable output, and increased reverse impact may occur.

4. Temperature rise increases, leading to further deterioration of the lubricating oil

The presence of impurities in the oil reduces the cleanliness of the lubricant, accelerates oil oxidation and deterioration, and may even lead to the formation of sludge.

The slurry and particles will continue to participate in wear, forming a vicious cycle of "increased impurities—deteriorated oil quality—accelerated wear—more impurities.".

5. Bearing and Sealing Damage

Impurities not only damage the worm gear and worm, but also enter the bearing raceway, cage, and sealing lip, causing pitting, scratches, abnormal clearance, and even early failure.

After being scratched by particles, the sealing component increases the likelihood of oil leakage, which in turn further reduces lubrication effectiveness.

6. Increased vibration and noise

Gear surface damage, bearing wear, and poor meshing can cause abnormal noise and increased vibration in the reducer.

If the noise shifts from a steady "hum" to sharp screeching, clicking, or periodic abnormal sounds, it typically requires shutdown inspection.

7. Severe faults such as jamming, seizing, or tooth breakage

Larger particles or metal debris lodged in the meshing area, bearings, or shaft end may cause the output shaft to seize.

Light loads may cause unstable transmission, while heavy loads can lead to worm gear locking, bearing damage, or even tooth breakage and transmission failure.
