Unveiling the principle of NGW planetary gear reducer and fully analyzing its industrial application

In the field of industrial power transmission, a structure called planetary gear is highly favored due to its unique design. Unlike common parallel axis gear transmissions, planetary gear systems extend the power transmission path from a two-dimensional plane to a three-dimensional space, achieving more compact and efficient torque conversion. NGW planetary gear reducer is a typical industrial application product of this principle. Its name "NGW" comes from its core transmission form: internal meshing (N), external meshing (G), and shared planetary carrier (W), which together form the closed-loop of its power flow.

Understanding the principle of NGW gearbox can be viewed as a miniature stellar system model. The central position of the sun wheel plays the role of a "star" and is the input end of power. The several planetary gears that revolve around it are like "planets", evenly mounted on a rotatable planet carrier. The outermost ring gear constitutes the "operating track" of this system. When the power drives the sun gear to rotate, the sun gear forces the planetary gears to rotate through gear meshing. However, the rotation of planetary gears does not occur freely, and their axes are constrained by the planetary carrier. The planetary gear inevitably undergoes a "revolution" trend along the inner wall of the gear ring while rotating, thereby driving the planetary carrier as a whole to rotate and output.

The subtlety of this process lies in the decomposition and synthesis of forces. The high-speed, low torque rotation of the input shaft is decomposed into multiple parallel force flow paths by the planetary gear system. Each planetary gear shares a portion of the load, and ultimately these force flows converge again at the planetary carrier, converting into low-speed, high torque output. Compared with traditional single-stage parallel axis gear reduction, this power splitting mechanism significantly increases the torque that can be transmitted per unit volume. At the same time, because the load is evenly distributed, the force on a single gear is reduced, improving the reliability and lifespan of the system.


Functional Deconstruction of 02 Structural Elements


If the NGW gearbox is disassembled into several functional modules, its design logic will be clearer. The sun gear planetary gear pair constitutes the high reduction gear shifting and power splitting module. The number of teeth on the sun gear is much less than that on the planetary gear, achieving initial deceleration and torque increase, and dividing the power into multiple parts. The planetary gear ring gear pair constitutes the constraint and steering module. The fixation of the internal gear ring (in the standard NGW type) provides a reaction force fulcrum for the revolution of the planetary gear, forcing the movement of the planetary gear to be converted into the rotation of the planetary carrier. As a composite output module, the planetary carrier is not a simple structural component. The selection of bearings, support stiffness, and accuracy of planetary axles directly determine the uniformity of load distribution among multiple planetary gears, which is the key factor affecting the overall performance and noise of the machine.
This modular perspective helps to understand the difference between it and worm gear reducers. Worm gear transmission relies on sliding friction between spatially staggered shafts. Although it can achieve high speed ratios, its efficiency is usually low and it is prone to heat generation. Planetary gear transmission is purely a rolling contact, with a mechanical efficiency of over 97%. When transmitting the same power, it usually has advantages in terms of volume and energy consumption.
