There is no need to panic about oil leakage in the gearbox of the slitting machine. 4 common reasons, cure methods

1. Aging or improper installation of seals

Cause analysis: The oil seals of the input shaft and output shaft of the reducer, as well as the sealing gaskets on the joint surface of the box, will fail due to aging, wear, or deformation under stress after long-term operation. In addition, if the assembly process is improper during maintenance and replacement (such as damaged oil seal lips or skewed installation), it can directly lead to oil leakage.

Root cure method:

Timely replacement: If aging or damage is found in the seals, new seals (such as skeleton oil seals or sealing gaskets) should be replaced immediately.

Standardized assembly: When installing the oil seal, a special fixture should be used to ensure that the lip is intact and installed flat, avoiding dry friction. For the joint surface of the box, it is necessary to remove old glue and foreign objects, apply sealant evenly again, and cross tighten bolts according to torque requirements.

2. The internal pressure of the reducer is too high

Analysis of the causes of high pressure: During the operation of the reducer, gear friction and oil stirring will generate heat, leading to an increase in internal temperature and gas expansion. If the breathable cap (ventilator) is blocked or poorly designed, the internal pressure of the machine will be greater than the external atmospheric pressure, which will "squeeze" the lubricating oil out of the weakly sealed gap.

The cure for excessive pressure:

Clean the breathable cap: Regularly inspect and clean the breathable cap to ensure smooth ventilation and maintain balanced pressure inside and outside the machine.

Structural improvement: For frequently clogged breathable caps, they can be replaced with oil cup style breathable caps with larger ventilation holes, or breathable devices can be installed on the inspection hole cover plate to achieve pressure equalization.

3. Excessive lubricating oil filling

Analysis of the reasons for excessive lubricating oil: If the amount of oil added exceeds the specified upper limit, it will cause the oil pool to be violently stirred, and the lubricating oil will splash everywhere inside the machine. A large amount of oil accumulates at the shaft seal, end cap, and joint surface, which is prone to leakage under pressure difference.

The cure for excessive lubricating oil:

Control oil level: Strictly follow the requirements of the equipment manual to add oil, control the oil level within the range of the oil level gauge or oil window, and avoid adding too much. If there is too much oil, the excess lubricating oil should be released in a timely manner.

4. Neck wear or structural design defects

Analysis of reasons for journal wear or structural design:

Neck wear: If the shaft head in contact with the oil seal is worn, rusted, or has grooves due to long-term operation, the oil seal will not be able to fit tightly, resulting in leakage.

Structural defects: Some gearbox housings do not have a designed oil return groove, or the structure of the oil blocking ring is unreasonable (such as a cup shaped oil blocking ring with poor oil return), resulting in lubricating oil thrown to the bearings and end caps not being able to flow back smoothly into the oil pool, ultimately leaking out through gaps.

Root treatment methods for journal wear or structural design:

Repair of shaft neck: For worn shaft heads, polymer composite materials can be used for on-site repair, or polishing and grinding can be carried out to restore their flatness and hardness.

Optimize the oil return structure: Process an inclined oil return groove at the lower end of the bearing seat or the joint surface of the housing, and open a corresponding gap at the end cover to ensure that excess lubricating oil can smoothly flow back to the oil pool along the oil return groove. For high-speed shafts, an oil slinger can be installed to protect the oil seal.
